Deaf Individual Alleges Baptist Hospital Failed to Appropriately Provide Sign Language InterpretersOctober 12, 2011--Nashville, TN Michael Gournaris arrived at Baptist Hospital Emergency Department by ambulance on October 12, 2010 exhibiting signs of a potential stroke. Gournaris, who is deaf, requested a sign language interpreter to help him communicate while at the hospital. Despite the hospital staff documenting Gournaris' need for a sign language interpreter, the hospital did not provide an interpreter for approximately the first 17 hours of his stay. Due Baptist Hospital's delays in and refusals to provide a sign language interpreter, Gournaris underwent multiple medical procedures that he did not fully understand. The lawsuit was filed in federal district court under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and names as defendants Seton Corporation d/b/a Baptist Hospital, Saint Thomas Health, and Ascension Health.
